Going « to the flame » (tittle from Scriabin) is coming up to the ultimate note, to the perfect vibration, to the absolute sharing in order to delicately, delightfully burn oneself a little, at the outermost bounds of experience, on the edge of forbidden limits, on the other side of what is known, looking deeply in our own soul.
Going « to the flame » is also going after life burst, solar pulsion, which slips through notes, from the composer to the player, and up to the audience, in order to rekindle sleeping embers, to inspire desire, youth, ardour and passion.
Villa-Lobos, an innovative composer and experienced guitar player, left us 23 works for solo guitar – the Brasilian popular Suite (1908-12), the Chôro n° 1 (1920), the Twelve studies (1924-29), the Five preludes (1940)-, expresing perfectly through them a fusion of two music traditions : Bach legacy and Brasilian traditional popular roots’ mark.
Manuel Calderon, who as many guitar players discovered studies and preludes when a teenager, at the beginning of his musical route, chose 12 of them, adding to them two parts of the Brasilian popular Suite(Mazurka-chôro and Valsa-chôro) as well as the concerto cadenza.
These are often tecnically glimmering works but moreover sensitive and hearty ones, inviting us to freedom and emotion, to meditation and serenity.
