Details:
It was the middle of the worst heat wave to hit the Northeast in years: July 5 & 6, 1993. Thirteen people (not including groupies) gathered in an air-conditioned New York City recording studio—not to escape from the heat, but to make the debut recording of young saxophonist/composer Sue Terry.
After living in NYC for eleven years, and playing as a side musician for bandleaders like Charli Persip, Jaki Byard, Clifford Jordan and Walter Bishop, Jr., she sought to make her own record featuring her own compositions and arrangements.
Certain advisors told her to record an album of standards, to make it more “radio-friendly” and introduce her to new audiences. Others (like producer Helen Keane) believed that her original material was strong enough to carry a mainstream jazz album.
You be the judge.
After a fourteen-year wait, Qi Note Records has released “Sweet” Sue Terry’s “BANDLEADER 101”, in the modern digital format.
The Back Story--What She Wanted: To record with one of her heroes, the man who calls her “Sis” and whom she calls “Brother Clark.” Sue also wanted veteran producer Helen Keane (Bill Evans, Tony Bennett, Art Farmer, etc.) to produce the date, using the working band “Persipitation” as the core group, with the addition of the two Clarks—Terry and Gayton.
While preparing for the recording, Keane was diagnosed with cancer. Though she went on with the session, it was one of her final projects.
A deal was brokered with a Japanese label. Because of tax difficulties, however, the company’s U.S. division folded. At this point, Sue was forming a new band, with a new concept, called “Terra Mars.” As she focused on the new group, the master tapes to her debut session languished in the studio vaults.
After recording several albums, mainly as a side musician, she decided to retrieve the master tapes from their climate-controlled environment, and re-mix the date. When she called the studio, she was told that they had closed and there was no inventory remaining in the vaults.
Searching on the Internet, Sue tried to find the former owner of the studio to locate the missing tapes. The search turned up someone with the same name as the owner, but who turned out not to be him. She had to accept the fact that the precious master tapes may be lost forever. But she wouldn’t give up.
In possession only of the DAT tap, a digital format popular in the nineties, she enlisted the help of noted engineer Dean Bailin to re-master the DAT tapes for a more modern sound. The result is BANDLEADER 101, and it showcases this meeting of legends CT, Persip and Keane with then up-and-comers Terry, Gayton, Holmes, Dorsey and Fountain.
The album runs 55:07 and contains two standards, one Clark Terry original, and seven Sue Terry originals. All the arrangements are by Sue. Check out what was intended to be the debut album of the “Superwoman of Jazz” (Hartford Courant) with the “formidable musical intelligence” (Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD) who’s been “firing from the heart every chance she got.” (Stanley Crouch)
