At age 15, his folks bought him a 6 string acoustic guitar and a harmonica. Keith was digging it, and worked endlessly on Neil Young, Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan tunes. He was still finding his voice, and wooing chicks.
Keith has passion for playing music; so much so that he decided to start a musical collective called The Shiitake Project. It consists of friends, family members and fellow musicians that enjoy making music. From this simple concept, Keith went on to organize and deliver a CD of cover tunes in 2002, and multiple ‘sold out’ live performances in Toronto - raising money for various Cancer research initiatives – most recently raising $1000 for prostate cancer at a show in April at historic Clinton’s.
Keith started writing original music in 2006. Encouraged by the positive response of his fans, he continued – and it kick started a career that is on the rise. The stepping off point was a show at the Cameron House in Toronto, July 5th, 2007 – Keith played to a packed house, presented no fewer than 18 originals, with a dozen covers thrown in for good measure. He received accolades for his beautiful voice and heartfelt songs.
He recorded his first solo CD: ‘So High, Solo’ in the fall of ‘07. It hit the shelves in December 2007 (https://www.tradebit.com, iTunes), and at the time of this bio it had reached aluminum status. Keith started thinking bigger, and set his eyes on loftier goals. One goal was to play the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern – Keith has crossed that one off his list, as he delivered a knock out intimate performance on Jan 30th, 2008 to an audience that was left enchanted. On July 23rd, Keith premiered his Shiitake Project Trio at Hugh’s Room – and delivered a non-stop, 19 song set of originals, including 8 new tracks now recorded and released on his latest CD – “Finding Voice”. The crowd, as well as the staff and management were very impressed with the show.
Keith feels that music is not just a young person’s game – he continues to write passionate songs and perform intimate shows. His critics feel he is only getting better, and his voice has transformed from mediocre to magnificent. With Keith winning the finals of the ‘Older Idol’ contest, a televised interview and performance airing in Japan, a host of dates in the Toronto area, and another CD released "Finding Voice" – keep your eyes and ears on Keith Shiner!
