Details:
The seeds of Slithering Beast were first sown in the spring of 2006 by musician and songwriter, Nick Dittmeier. Homegrown in Indiana on the outskirts of Louisville, Kentucky, the songs soon began taking form with clear and simple intent-- to play country music the way it was meant to be played, like country heroes had in the past. Legends such as Dwight Yoakam, Merle Haggard, and George Jones influenced the tone of Slithering Beast’s music-- honest, raw, and ultimately, unapologetic.
After many acoustic performances throughout summer and fall of 2006, two five-song EPs titled The Drunk Driving EP and Dead Marches were released. The two EPs explored uncharted musical territory for Dittmeier and established a steady lineup of musicians who wanted to be a part of it. Slithering Beast’s live shows quickly became a reality, and a much talked-about one at that. Shows became more frequent in support of their recently constructed full-band sound, and older songs were touched up as new ones were consistently introduced. As the new song lineup came together, it was time to return to the studio.
Recording sessions in Georgetown, Indiana rendered an uncompromising honky-tonk/country rock hybrid that was a complete culmination of the band’s achievements thus far, as well as a realization of what the future may hold. The fourteen-song full-length CD titled Werewolf Ballads was released through Chicago-based Sophomore Lounge Records. The band began touring and performing live shows locally to introduce their refreshing brand of loud and fearless country music.
After attracting attention from Werewolf Ballads, Slithering Beast didn’t slow down its prolific songwriting habits. While supporting the first full-length release, ten new songs were written and arranged throughout the winter and spring. New tracks were finally recorded in their Jeffersonville, Indiana studio in the summer of 2008, resulting in a completed collection which was soon to be titled Midnight Royalty.
This newest offering differs from those prior because of its more complex instrumental arrangements and sharply reflective lyrics, as well as its more mature tone. The music stays on page with the original country influences of the band, but also draws from Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys, The Band, and contemporaries such as Leslie Feist. Overall, Midnight Royalty only furthers the progress that the band has continually made since its inception and is the first release completely recorded and engineered by Dittmeier and Slithering Beast themselves.
