I don''t even know where to begin in the review of this CD. I''m totally blown away by the eclectic combination of sounds on this very earthy, natural sounding release.
Peter Whitehead is the sole musician on the album, layering sounds from many unusual, or homemade instruments to create a sound that defies definition. This mix of textures often give the songs an interesting feel similar to Peter Gabriel''s album Passion (The soundtrack to "The Last Temptation of Christ").
Along the same vein, but quite different in many respects, Three Bags Full also has a combination of ethnic influences that hint towards the cultural music of India, the southern Mediterranean area, and even the orient. Songs vary greatly in tempo and mood across the span of the CD; sometimes slow and melodic, other times frenzied and insane. Also, I must draw particular attention to Peter''s great rhythm.
His skills as a percussionist are, in a word, fantastic. My favorite tracks are definitely "The Tree of Life - Parts I and II" All told, this pair of songs span almost 18 minutes, and really weave a great "story" as Peter gracefully expressed the changing moods.
Another notable track is the pacifying and smooth track titled "The Dark Day," and the wild, unruly track "Don''t Get Me Started" with it''s almost hip-hop drum beat and spastic fiddle playing. Don''t hesitate to check this CD out... it''s one of a kind, and I guarantee you''ve never heard anything like it. Reviewed by Dave Magnuson
