One of the growing breed of new acoustic musicians whose influences span the rich heritages of folk, classical, jazz and world styles, Peter Janson''s repertoire is weighted towards original instrumentals that he plays with sensitivity and sophistication. Performing extensively as a solo artist, his "folk/world-fusion" fingerstyle acoustic instrumental guitar music may best be described by a review of his music from the Taunton Daily Gazette as music for fans of "Windham Hill guitar legends Will Ackerman, Michael Hedges and other acoustic trailblazers like Leo Kottke and John Fahey." His newest solo album, Firelight Moonlight, was nominated in the first round of the 2004 Grammy Awards for Best New Age Album and Best Engineered Album. His newest collaborative album, Jamie Bonk - My World, has reached #1 on the national Top 100 Radio Charts*. and has been awarded the "Best Album of 2004" and "Best Acoustic Album of 2004" at the NAR LifeStyle Music Awards. His solo albums have been awarded a variety of honors including: First round nomination for "Best New Age Album" and "Best Engineered Album - non-classical" for "Firelight Moonlight" from the 2004 Grammy Awards; three times nominated, two times finalist, for "Best Album of the Year" from the international NAV Music Awards; Peter''s solo music has reached as high as #2 on the national Top 100 Radio Charts.* As of May 2004, his music has accrued nine #1 rankings, 87 top 10, and 179 top 20 rankings from reporting radio programs. Acoustic Folk/World-fusion artist Peter Janson''s solo fingerstyle guitar playing is inviting and evocative and has an indefinable quality that can touch people on many different levels. His trio performances (with acoustic bass and African/Eastern percussion) include mixed sets of solo, duo, and trio music. Whether solo guitar or with his trio, his honest and engaging performances display a unique and original musical style that reveals an East-meets-West gestalt yet is thoroughly familiar sounding because it is steeped in both American folk and European classical techniques. Peter has shared stages with Ed Gerhard, Alex de Grassi, Chris Proctor, Tim Harrison, Brooks Williams, and many others, and has performed in a wide range of concert venues. Peter is also a requested performer for the fine guitars built by Bill Tippin and Mario Beauregard at various national and international guitar festivals. Acoustic Guitar says "Luscious tone and elegant compositional ideas... Janson is a subtle and expressive player." Spirit of Change magazine raves Janson''s music "magnificently represents fingerstyle guitar playing at its best. A rare 10+!" and Instrumental Weekly says "a diehard fan of solo guitar will discover that Peter Janson has set a new standard in this genre." Peter Janson''s audience is growing and broadening. Wind & Wire magazine raves "Peter Janson is one of the best acoustic guitarists recording today... a true artist''s soul."

PERSONAL

Peter Janson began playing guitar as a kid in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he quickly sought to find his own style and sound. He was never comfortable imitating other guitarists. "When I began playing guitar seriously," he says, "I figured out that I had to understand the difference between learning from a great guitarist, emulating him or her, and using those lessons as a catalyst that would enable my true self to emerge. My parents taught me early on that we are each too valuable as ourselves to try to be someone else."

Although his list of influences is long and diverse - Martin Simpson, Michael Hedges, Pat Metheny, Leo Kottke, Pierre Bensusan, Ed Gerhard, Doyle Dykes, Alex de Grassi, Dominic Miller, Tuck Andress, David Leisner and more - Janson''s earliest musical influence was his father. "My dad played an eclectic style of solo guitar that stemmed from his love of the music of Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, Les Paul and Andrés Segovia. From as early as I can remember I would just sit and listen to him for hours at a time. He was an awesome player: style, taste, technique, memory, improvisation, he had it all. I''m sure I''ve inherited my love of eclecticism from him, and I hope I help people enjoy guitar music as he did." Yet, influences aside, Janson is a self-taught guitarist; though he did study formally for two years with David Leisner at the New England Conservatory of Music where he received his MM degree. In addition to writing, recording, and performing his own music, Peter currently directs the guitar studies program at the University of Massachusetts Boston.

His general artistic influences include composer Gyorgy Ligeti, pianist Bill Evans, poet Emily Dickinson, artists Giotto and Vincent Van Gogh.
