Details:
Big Heart Down combines the progressive acoustic sensibility of Chris Silver (guitar, mandolin), Pete Mathison (bass), and Lance Rhicard (banjo, dobro, vocals) with singer/songwriter Jerree Small anchoring harmony vocals.
With titles like ‘Cold Water,’ ‘The Distant Swells,’ and ‘The Wind Out Here,’ Big Heart Down evokes elements of Lake Superior while alluding to legendary figures such as John Henry’s shaker and contemporary prose poet Louis Jenkins. ‘Open Boat’ is an instrumental ode not only to the Stephen Crane short story, but to life on the surf of the “inland sea,” Superior. Renditions of traditional tunes ‘Shady Grove’ and ‘Take This Hammer’ assume contemporary grooves while maintaining their integrity—what one would expect from members of the bluegrass fusion group The Chris Silver Band.
