Details:
Juliana McCorison was born in England, raised in Canada and left a part of her heart in Australia. Having said this, the vast majority of her friends are in the US, which makes her a truly international musician.
While classical music was her first love, folk and filk followed. After many years of dreaming of the opportunity to share the music she loved, Juliana finally built a recording studio and made this dream a reality with "Not Just Lullabies from Planet Earth".
This CD covers a fair bit of ground. The common thread is a gentle, melodic and varied set of arrangements, comprising of cello, guitars, flute, bass flute, dulcimers, mandolin, glockenspiel, unique instruments of percussion, harp, whistles and bass. The vocals are clear and diction is valued so you can actually understand the lyrics.
Juliana started playing guitar early and enjoyed hanging around the coffeehouses and the local YMWCA accumulating tab and experience. After years of studying classical voice, she turned back to folk and then, in the 80''s discovered the music of the science fiction/fantasy folks.
Filk, a mispelling of the word folk, was fun and accessible. An inclusive community of music and literature lovers, they developed playful and entertaining songs that relate to fantasy and science fiction themes. What is filk? Anything that is performed at a science fiction convention or song circle. Folk is frequently indistinguishable from filk and many mainstream musicians produce songs considered filk by filkers, on a regular basis.
Call it what you will, "Not Just Lullabies from Planet Earth" is a lovely collection of songs that playfully entertain and provide a gentle space in which to spend time.
