A fusion of melody, ancient Tibetan mantra and trunk rumbling ill beats washed with real dub flavor, this CD flows as an astonishing mix that leaves you yearning for more. Jetsunma’s fusion of lyrics, mantra and slamming beats aims to open the listener''s heart and free the mind. This is true enlightenment dub; beyond genre classification, but experienced by dancing feet and truth of mind simultaneously. Powerful and confident, her songs brim with certainty that, if enough people get with such a view and fearlessly take a stand, suffering could cease to pervade today’s world. The Revolution of Compassion becomes possible. She even delivers a pointed message to the current U.S. President about his seemingly endless war.
Born in Brooklyn, Jetsunma brings that urban edge to her music. Recognized by eminent Nyingma masters HH Dilgo Khyenste Rinpoche, HH Penor Rinpoche and Dzongang Rinpoche as an incarnate Bodhisattva, Jetsunma was the first western woman so recognized in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Her songs spark with the spontaneity and power of traditional Bodhisattva song: bridging the urban underground and deep spiritual truth.
Totally Killing It brings real underground skills to this project. From John''s work on the track Planet Rock as well as on classics by Francois Kevorkian and Shep Pettibone, to his dub schooling from Tyrone Downey (Bob Marley & Wailers) and Stephen Stanley (Steel Pulse, Black Uhuru, Tom Tom Club) working late nights at Compass Point Studios in The Bahamas. To the Totally Killing It Sub Dub EPs w/Raz ''Badawi'' Messanai that coalesced New York''s Illbient scene as DJs like DJ Olive (who coined the term ''illbient'') and DJ Spooky championed the EPs world wide. To the groundbreaking Guru Yoga CD w/HH Penor Rinpoche. Totally Killing It has laid it down real and deep and ahead of the curve since before you could walk much less dance.
On this CD, Jetsunma''s vocals, at times fierce, at times soulful, at times heart openingly emotive wrap around Totally Killing It beats that groove then fracture to broken patterns or minimal tribal house, or chill trip hop laced with primordially potent mantra. Tracks 6,7,8,14,15,17, & 18 were tracked in only two days at Totally Killing It''s secret Williamsburg dub chamber with JDub hitting live MPC rhythms and Jetsunma dropping whole spontaneous verse and chorus structures. Stitched together and mixed just as fast, they retain raw live energy.
Blinded by View crew with Jetsunma crafted tracks 1,3,4,5,9,10,11,12 over TKI beats at Blinded by View Studios, Poolesville MD, her lyrics and melodies fueled by the bell like power of Tara Middleton''s bkg vocals. Yeshe Dorje''s synth and treatments and Nathaniel Waggoner''s percussion expand the sound. The tracks were mixed sparse and dubby back in Brooklyn and, the whole thing, along with a remix of a track by Jetsunma''s previous band Skydancer, got cut together as one flow.
Jetsunma’s music brings the message that social change, spiritual transformation, and, even enlightenment are in your hands. Especially, when you’re dancing to this record.
