Reviews: Like A Spring Day

John Gilbert - ejazznews - Feb. 19, 2005

The lyrics of Sonja Tran along with a fine Quartet led by Saxophonist Bob Brough (pronounced like ''Bruff'') and the vocals of Carol McCartney are the ingredients for a very enjoyable recording.

"Paradise Is Good Enough For Me" An understated Latin beat along with Tran''s clever message which Carol McCartney parlays into a cute vocal treatise, with fine phrasing makes this tune work beautifully.
"Only Summer Knows" This up tempo tune which features some nice, albeit brief, 4 bar exchanges between McCartney''s scatting and Brough''s tenor is heightened by Brough''s solo and a blistering piano statement by pianistStan Fomin. This number swings with abandon.

Originality by all participants and a new look and sound in the jazz genre make this album worth the price of admission...

Michael P. Gladstone - https://www.tradebit.com - April,2005

Surely saxophonist/composer Bob Brough must be one of the best jazzmen in Toronto. His second album, Like A Spring Day offers the opportunity to showcase the talents of singer Carol McCartney. Brough collaborated with lyricist Sonja Tran on all but two of the eleven compositions.

Last year at this time, I reviewed Bob Brough''s debut recording, A Decade of Favorites and although he had appeared on over twenty recordings, this was his first album. The songs written for this new album are largely uptempo tunes with optimistic titles like "I Know Love Must Be Near," "Paradise Is Good Enough For Me," and the title tune. Sonja Tran''s lyrics are sunny and uplifting as exemplified by the "A View Painted Citron and Blue." The goods are delivered by Carol McCartney who sings in a manner reminiscent of Jackie Cain (Jackie & Roy). Her delivery is enthusiastic and she seems comfortable with the jazz vocal genre scatting with ease. The best example of this is on "Today" where she has an extended scat opportunity and also trades four with the band.

Bob Brough impressed us last year on his debut and, likewise, as an accompanist he proves equally adept. We get to hear him solo on every track and also provide gorgeous obbligatos behind McCartney in a manner that you''d associate with Stan Getz or Scott Hamilton. When we get the first ballad, "Daisy," Brough elevates the song per his solo. On the version of the Simon & Garfunkel-associated "Scarborough Fair," taken at a faster tempo, McCartney delivers the melody line and then hands off to Brough who soulfully makes this into a legitimate jazz version. The trio of Stan Fomin, piano; Artie Roth, bass and Kevin Brow, drums are all regular members of the Brough group and provide fine support with Fomin and Roth getting in some brief solo space here.

Band Bios: The Bob Brough Quartet

This acoustic jazz quartet plays a mixture of original jazz compositions and jazz standards. It draws from a range of styles from traditional post-1950''s up to the modern and eclectic styles of today. Bob Brough has been leading jazz bands since the 1970''s, culminating in the most recent incarnation of a quartet which began in 1998 and includes Stan Fomin - piano, Artie Roth - bass and Kevin Brow - drums.

Bob Brough - saxophones
Early studies included woodwind performance, harmony and arranging in private lessons with Paul Brodie and Gordon
Delamont during the late 60s, followed by further flute and piano studies until 1973. Bob has been well-known as band leader, sideman, and composer in Toronto jazz venues since the 1970s. He has been recorded as sideman on many
recordings including 2 Juno-nominated CDs during the 1980s, with Time Warp. Further examples of his solo and ensemble
performance can be heard on Richard Underhill''s 2003 Juno-award winning CD, Tales From The Blue Lounge".
In November of 2003, Bob released his own CD "A Decade Of Favorites" including 7 never previously-released tracks, with varying band memberships, recorded from 1991. An additional 3 tracks were recorded live with Stan, Artie and Kevin at The Montreal Bistro in July 2003 and added to the CD as an after-thought to the original project.
Bob has now released a second CD. 11 tracks featuring 9 original songs by Bob, with lyrics written by Sonja Tran,
and 2 golden oldies - all performed by guest vocalist Carol McCartney. The release date was May 10, 2005.

Stan Fomin - piano
Stan studied at the Kiev College of Music and later at the Donezk Conservatory of Music in the Ukraine. His love for
performing, composing, and arranging have taken him across the former Soviet Union and western Europe, first touring
with an army band in his early twenties and later as the Music Director for the cruise line, Dolphin Seeraisen.
Since coming to Canada in 1997, Stan has made a significant impact on the jazz musicians he has worked with in
performances around Toronto. His approach to jazz piano is fresh and exciting; 2 qualities that carry over into his teachings and his work writing music for television.

Artie Roth - bass
After graduating from the York University Jazz Program with the Oscar Peterson Scholarship, Artie continued bass studies at The Banff Centre for Fine Arts and later completed two consecutive Canada Council sponsored study tenures in New York. Artie has performed and recorded extensively in Canada, the U.S. and overseas. Recent career highlights have been a Canadian tour with New York guitarist Rez Abassi, a Canada/U.S. tour with The Greg Runions Quintet featuring Kenny Wheeler, and performance at The Texaco Jazz Festival in N.Y.C. with Terry Cade. Artie can be heard as a sideman on CDs such as saxophonist Paul Pacanowski''s "Some Other Time", pianist John Roney''s "This One Goes Out", and vocalist Melissa Stylianou''s "Bachlorette". In 2005, he released his debut CD as band leader, "Parallels."

Kevin Brow - drums
Kevin Brow has quickly become known as a creative and musical force in Toronto''s jazz scene. At 25, he has
shared the stage with Canadian Jazz luminaries such as Don Thompson, David Occhipinti, Alex Dean, Kevin Turcotte,
Ted Quinlin and others. He was the recipient of the Avedis Zildjian Percussion Scholarship in 2002. Kevin leads his own contemporary jazz quartet and is a member of several other groups including the Nick Ali trio and the Laila Biali Octet. Kevin has been boasted as, "one of the most creative and musical drummers of his generation in this country," by Canadian jazz saxophonist Mike Murley. His discography includes recording with the Jazz trio "Trio Nouveau," The Kevin Brow Quartet, The Dan Goldman Trio, The Laila Biali Octet, and the pop rock group "Hawaii."

Carol McCartney - vocals
Carol is featured on all tracks on, "Like A Spring Day." She was also featured on Bob''s, "A Decade Of Favorites," on a track recorded live at the Montreal Bistro; previously on Chase Sanborn''s CDs, "Sweet & Low," and "Cut to The Chase," and on the Juno-nominated recording, "Taking Flight," with the big band, "Freeflight." Live Jazz performances of note include concerts with the Mississauga Philharmonic Orchestra and other orchestras across Canada singing in a show based on the music of Benny Goodman as arranged by trumpeter John MacLeod; performances with Peter Appleyard across Canada; gigs with the Rex Hotel Orchestra; per-formances at Mohawk College with The Faculty Jazz Band; appearances with Bob Brough, Chase Sanborn, and with her own Jazz Quintet at local venues such as The Top O'' The Senator, The Montreal Bistro, The Carlu and The Rex. https://www.tradebit.com
