Details:
1994 release from this popular Michigan septet.
Forming in 1985 around the kitchen table in a small town near Pontiac, Michigan., this group discovered their mutual love for traditional celtic music and song. Honing their chops from sessions to weekly rehearsals soon it was decided…”we need a name” said one. Another offered, “let’s call ourselves The Beatles, but well, Modesty Forbids.” In the years since past a number of personnel have come and gone, but Modesty Forbids has endured, not a mere gesture of humility, but a group of musicians, known as “North Oakland County’s (Michigan) premier Irish band. The group has appeared at multiple clubs and festivals in southeast Michigan and Ontario and has opened for the likes of Ricky Skaggs, Patrick Street and Makem and Clancy.

Members:

Mike Baker, guitar, bouzouki, vocals
Andy Dabcznski, violin, viola
Bob Hubbach, hammer dulcimer, harmonica
Pete Melton, bass
Erik Sanderson, violin, guitar, vocals
Bree Schultz, flute, pennywhistle, triangle
Glenn Schultz, accordion, whistle, guitar

Legendary Irish Fiddler Kevin Burke regarding Modesty Forbids and Calliope House:

October 15, 1994, Portland, Oregon
“What do you think of when you think of Michigan?” I asked. “Cars and football.” He said, “Well you don’t know Mike Baker Do ya?” Now I know Mike Baker and I know he has a car and he has probably even played football, at some time or other. But anytime I have spoken to him, music has been the topic. This interest and love for music has inspired Mike and his musical Michigan friends to come together to make this recording of tunes and songs from a variety of sources(one source I’ve noticed is the group called Patrick Street!!!). To give you an idea of how versatile and talented the members of this group are. Erik sings the Cajun song; Mike sings most of the Irish songs; Glenn, Bob and Andy all had a hand in the arrangin’; Pete provides the bottom; while Bree soars to the heights. And that’s only part of the story! Excuse the pun but “modesty forbids.” Mention of the fact that among this band you will find a doctor of music, a doctor of medicine, a computer specialist, a flute maker, an automotive product designer and who knows what else? But that’s not the point! The point is that music brought all of these people together. So why don’t you sit down and enjoy it with them? And next time someone says, “What do you think of when you think of Michigan?” You can reply with a superior grin, “Modesty Forbids.”
