Details:
Born in London in 1975 to Syrian parents, I moved to Syria at age two and lived most of my life in the village of Alkafer.
I received a lot of inspiration from the people of my village and this fed my musical soul. I became inspired by the sound of the instruments. I wanted to learn to compose. With family’s support, I started to play Accordion at age five, with no instruction and found no difficulty to sing and transfer the melody to my fingers. The first song I played was “London Bridge Is Falling Down” as my father always sang it to me.
At age nine I composed my first song for my school''s theatre. I won the national competition in Syria for composing and playing Accordion twice, in 1985 and 1986.
Starting to learn more instruments by myself, I began playing the Oud (Mid Eastern Guitar or Lute) at thirteen, then Nay {Arabic flute or bamboo) at sixteen then Piano and keyboards, plus Arabic percussion (Tabla, Reqe, Katem) by listening to the tremendous library of Arabic music and learning a lot of songs.
My first project was with English singer Terry Hall for the album called The Hour of Two Lights. I played Accordion, Oud and contributed arranging for the eastern musical section. We played on BBC Radio and 3MTV.
I joined the multi-cultural band NARA, with musicians from the UK, Ireland, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt, introducing Eastern music to the West. We performed at World Music Festivals and venues in the UK, Canada, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Greece, Ireland, Croatia and Czech Republic.
Produced a CD by re-arranging traditional Egyptian songs that have been performed by famous Arab singers betweenv1960-1970. I also performed at Royal Albert Hall in 2005 as an intro band for the famous Arab singer Rageb Aalamaa and famous actor Waleed Tawfeek.
This album represents my influences from Eastern and Western music combining Latin, Jazz, Classical Gipsy, Turkish and Arabic music forms.
