"The revival of the old-time "brother duet" style in California has been led in part by The MacRae Brothers, Jake Quesenberry and Matt Dudman."
- San Francisco Bluegrass Festival
The MacRae Brothers perform old-time country, pre-bluegrass brother-duets, focusing on close harmony singing with guitar and mandolin accompaniment. Matt Dudman plays mandolin and sings high harmony, while Jake Quesenberry, an extremely charismatic front-man, plays guitar and sings the lead.
Originally from Kentucky, Jake was honored in 2004 by the California Bluegrass Association as a “California Bluegrass Pioneer”, and in that same year Kentucky’s Governor commissioned Jake as an honorary Kentucky Colonel, the highest honor awarded by the Commonwealth. In July of 2006 Jake was asked to be a part of the prestigious International Bluegrass Music Museum Video Oral History Project on “Bluegrass Masters”, the same month that he was also recognized in an official proclamation from The City of Morgan Hill, California.
Matt has recorded and performed as a first-call ‘hired gun’ for the ‘cream of the crop’ of musicians and bands in California. He published the definitive Bluegrass Unlimited articles on Vern (Williams) & Ray (Park) and on single-microphone performance, and was selected as an interviewer for the International Bluegrass Music Museum “Video Oral History Project”. Matt runs Pleasant Valley Music and Squirty Records, having recorded the likes of Sandy Rothman and Ed Neff and provided engineering assistance with High Country’s 25 year retrospective recording.
The MacRae Brothers have performed at most of the major festivals and clubs in California, demonstrated the roots of bluegrass music for the International Bluegrass Music Association, and released three well received recordings. They promise an entertaining show filled with humor, stories and best of all, nice old songs with beautiful close harmony.
