Details:
Having played together since 1983, Matt Otto and Andy Ehling record their first collaborative project of original material.
Andy Ehling, who studied jazz performance at Berklee School and Washington State University, has played in both the U.S. and Japan and currently resides in San Fransisco California. He has been likened to Lee Konitz, Paul Desmond and Charlie Parker and improvises in a creative lyrical style, with an immediately recognizable tone. Both musicians performed together in various configurations in both Japan and the U.S. and continue to perform regularly on the west coast.
Matt Otto studied music performance and composition at the Indiana University, Berklee School of Music, The New School for Social Research (BFA) and California Institute of the Art (MFA). He has performed with a variety of artists, including Charlie Haden , Larry Koonse, Rashid Bakr, Ben Monder, Willie Jones III, Anthony Wilson, Alan Ferber, Albert “Tootie” Heath, Gregory Hutchinson, Joe La Barbera, Junior Mance, Leroy Vinegar, Jimmy Smith and others. He currently plays and has recorded with the Anthony Wilson Nonet (“The Power of Nine” Groove Note 1035, 2006), Joeless Shoe ( Joeless Shoe, 634479655630, 2007) as well as leading his own groups (53 West 19th, Noir Records 1996), (Red, Origin Records 2000) and appearing on 15 CDs as a side man.
The music here is relaxed and melodic, and the improvisation is both lyrical and focused, making for an enjoyable listening experience. The album has a folk like quality and is reminiscent of the cool jazz from the 50''s.
