Hill of Slane – Psalms, Sonatas & Sojourns
by Pasquale Bianculli and Kathleen McDonald

Just to the west of Dublin, in County Meath, the Hill of Slane rises above the ancient landscape. Myths from the seventh century recount that St. Patrick lit the Paschal fire in defiance to High King Logaire. Despite his defiance, or maybe because of it, he was permitted to continue his missionary work in Ireland converting the king’s pagan armies to Christianity. The ruins of the friary and Law College remain, with an imposing, time-worn statue of St. Patrick himself standing in their midst.

We visited this mystical place during this recording and, like McKinnon, were overwhelmed by its beauty and mystery. Our sojourn seemed to clarify for us the very goal of this CD: to share, in some small way, the beauty and timeless mysteries found in this music.

In 2005, Kathy and Pat, along with Harris Becker, began a music festival in rural Quèbec, Midsummer Music Dream/Songe d’été en musique. The festival brings together Canadian and American musicians for a festival of concerts, workshops and private instruction in one of the most beautiful and bucolic settings in the Eastern Townships of Quèbec.

Kathy and Pat live in Brooklyn Heights, NY where they continue to enrich the community with their music. Kathy directs “Baroque Across the River”, an early music ensemble that plays concerts in historical settings in Brooklyn and around the New York region. She is a student of Samuel Baron and Sandra Miller and has performed in master classes with Marcel Moyse in Vermont. Pat is Adjunct Professor of Guitar at Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus and Guitar Instructor at the United Nations International School. His teachers include Jerry Willard, Edgard Dana, Joseph Cassano and Billy Bauer.
