3ology’s second studio offering, “Out of the Depths,” their first on CMW Records, is an expansion of the jazz-based sound established on their debut recording. It is also a collaboration of close friends showing the Colorado-based groups’ capacity for new directions.
The sax/bass/drums trio of brothers Doug and Tim Carmichael and Jon Powers is augmented by the addition of Milo Fortes’ Jamaican-style chat and Scott “Gusty” Christensen’s didgeridoo on a handful of tracks. The recording gives new insight into the groups’ compositional abilities while continuing to showcase their joy of exploring free improvisation.
The tone for “Out of the Depths” was set by a boating accident the weekend before the recording was made in which Tim, Doug and their father nearly drowned. “They say some of the best art comes from tragedy,” Doug Carmichael reflects. As a result, everyone came to the studio with a different perspective – a thankful perspective.
Once again, Heath Hardesty of Eveningtide Studios and Jessica Broom of Sweet Apple Designs have contributed their considerable talents to help create a sort of memoir to the event.
This recording also represents the beginning of an exciting partnership between 3ology and Creative Music Works, a non-profit organization based in Colorado dedicated to perpetuating and increasing the awareness of creative music.
