Details:
For me, writing a song is a very private process, a way to express some inner feeling or vision, something intensely personal. But even when finished, down on paper, it’s still just one person’s dream. It’s not until the song is sung by others does the dream awaken, not until other musicians begin interpreting the song’s hidden story according to what it means to them does it take on a life of its own.
That’s what happened with most of the songs on this CD, including the title track, The Seeker. I brought this composition to the project with just a bass line, a simple melody over a basic harmonic framework, few instructions, not even a title to suggest what it meant to me. I just knew the story I wanted it to tell and believed these musicians would hear it, too, in their own way. They immediately intuited the vision I had for the piece, and it began to evolve into something greater than I could have imagined -- more powerful, more human, spoken passionately by four musicians with one voice.
So this CD represents the dream realized: a program of all original compositions, many of which are simple but “humable” melodies that favor direct approach to improvisation, played by musicians I trusted to bring vibrant life into the written notes. The intuition and skill of these artists, the grace of their interpretations, made the project blossom fully. My deep thanks go out to them -– Michael Bello, Casey Cameron, and Michael Pinkham -– for their art, their dedication and encouragement, and for their friendship.
