"Mixing up dixieland, early jazz, jugband, ragtime, blues, roots and humor, this upbeat, punchy album appeals to the fun-loving country soul in everyone. Best known for his old-time blues harmonica playing, Damian has concocted quite the sassy brew adding the tuba, jug, and washboard to his folky blues get-up, with hints of Tom Waits, Norton Buffalo, John Hammond, Django Reindardt, and Woody Guthrie. A tickling album that can stick it to the blues ache when it
needs to." -CD Baby front page feature, March 27, 2004
Damian Coen is internationally renowned for his colorful blues harmonica playing, and his success as a songwriter. Emerging from Sydney''s acoustic blues scene in the late 1980s, Coen founded the now-fabled jug band, The Mudsteppers. A debut solo album "Six Lane Highway" is the latest chapter in his career.
Damian has performed at Australia''s most prestigious festivals such as the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival and the National Folk Festival, and has supported musicians on tour such as Charlie Musselwhite, John Hammond and The James Cotton Band. Damian also opened for John Hammond in Australia in May 2004.
Living in the USA for four years, Coen honed his lyrical and instrumental talents under Delta bluesman, Paul Brasch''s influence and has returned to Australia to embark on a solo career as a country blues songwriter and performer.
Damian has gathered together some of Australia''s finest blues and roots musicians to record this collection of original songs. Exploring the musical styles of early country blues, old time ballads and jug bands, Damian creates an original acoustic sound steeped in tradition. His lyrical style is influenced by both folk and blues genres and expresses his personal and socio-political observations. Damian (harmonica and lead vocals) is joined by an impressive line-up for his album: Adam Barnard (drums, washboard), Damon Davies (blues guitar, vocal harmonies), Elizabeth Frencham (double bass), Marcus Holden (fiddle, mandolin), Don Hopkins (piano), Carolyn "Cazzbo" Johns (tuba, jug), Robert Maxwell Jones (vocal harmonies), and Chris O''Connor (guitar). Delivering each song with colour and conviction, Damian never compromises on the integrity of his musical style. https://www.tradebit.com
