About The Daniel Glass Trio and Something Colorful
Very Tall''s first release is ''Something Colorful,'' by the Daniel Glass Trio. This is a natural starting point for V.T. because the record embodies our ethos, and besides, Daniel is my partner in Very Tall. In fact, it was seeing the Trio perform one night that inspired Very Tall''s creation. While watching the magnificent interaction between the musicians, I found myself thinking how proud I would be to have a recording label if this were the kind of music I could release. At the same time, Daniel was thinking that he''d like to record the Trio and maybe press some copies that he could sell at gigs. It wasn''t long before we decided to pool our resources, expand our goals and set off towards a new jazz empire.
A word about Daniel: Daniel Glass is the well-known drummer for Royal Crown Revue, the founding fathers of the retro-swing movement. Daniel has also recorded and toured with Bette Midler, Gene Simmons, Al Viola, Mike Ness (Social Distortion), Barbara Morrison, Debbie Davies, Plas Johnson and Johnny Boyd (Indigo Swing). Daniel''s passion for and scholarly interest in drum history - he''s written three books and numerous articles on the subject - is clearly reflected in the respect he pays to the tradition. But neither is he a nostalgist. Indeed, the playing, the presentation, the interaction and the aggressiveness of ''Something Colorful'' is thoroughly modern.
In addition to Daniel, the Trio consists of the amazing Eldad Tarmu (Vibes) and Tim Emmons (Bass). Tarmu has several acclaimed solo releases and Emmons is a top notch studio musician in the Los Angeles area. Drums-Vibes-Bass is an unusual arrangement, and the Trio explores the form fully. What''s most striking is that the music feels like it was constructed like a three-legged table - each musician must contribute equally or the whole thing will wobble or fall over. Next most striking is the energy, carefully captured in the recording (you are definitely in the room). After that, you can pick any of a dozen reasons that make this such a memorable work.
