ACOUSTIC BLENDER: A tasty mix of styles and voices
ACOUSTIC BLENDER is an alternative folk group consisting of Hope Wesley Harrison, Justin Solonynka, and David & Jenny Heitler-Klevans (otherwise known as Two of a Kind). All the members of Acoustic Blender sing, and their vocal harmonies and arrangements are the centerpiece of the group. Acoustic Blender’s repertoire is eclectic, with themes ranging from the personal to the political, the ridiculous to the sublime. Along with numerous originals, the group covers songs by The Beatles, Patty Larkin, Jackson Browne, Mary Chapin Carpenter, the Roches and the Dixie Chicks. Songs about peace, justice and endangered species are found alongside ones about llamas and lime jello. Otto Bost, host of “Acoustic Eclectic” on WDIY-FM says: "Acoustic Blender is a group of four uniquely talented musicians who sing intelligent, witty, and uplifting songs. They blend their classical, contemporary, and traditional folk influences together as seamlessly as they blend their powerful four-part harmonies."
Acoustic Blender releases debut CD: “Crazy Whirled”
Crazy Whirled, released October 2008, is the first studio recording from eclectic folk quartet Acoustic Blender. Acoustic Blender is Hope Wesley Harrison, Jenny & David Heitler-Klevans (multi-award-winning children’s duo Two of a Kind), and singer/songwriting pianist Justin Solonynka. After five years of collaboration, Acoustic Blender navigates genre geography with ease.
“We don’t really set out to break any boundaries,” says Hope Wesley Harrison. “Music just kind of morphs when we make it, a product of our friendship and musical chemistry.” By Acoustic Blender’s reckoning, Lennon & McCartney’s “In My Life” deserves a brass interlude, and Joanne Hammil’s a cappella round on stress management, “A Question of Tempo,” segues naturally into Edvard Grieg by way of Percy Mayfield. Jackson Browne’s powerful “Lives in the Balance” gets a timely instrumental update, and Mary Chapin Carpenter’s “Why Walk When We Can Fly?” becomes call-and-response gospel with pan-African percussion.
Acoustic Blender’s Crazy Whirled also includes original material. Jenny Heitler-Klevans’ achingly beautiful “Suspended in the Air” captures the pathos of competing family priorities, and her “Crazy World” is a love song for our politically turbulent age. Justin Solonynka’s lush “Clarita” tells a lovely tale of innocence and generosity, while his “Even You” bites back a caustic retort in the name of (somewhat begrudging) universal love.
Acoustic Blender combines folk, pop, jazz, and classical sensibilities into an irresistibly listenable album, Crazy Whirled, now available at cdbaby.
