Ally Howatt and small town living just go together. “I’ve lived in Caledonia ON my whole life and wouldn’t want it any other way.” Ally loves the people of Caledonia and the way they support one another in this tight knit community.
Music has been a part of Ally since she was small. Her involvement in a musical at school planted the seed for her future endeavors. Her parents encouraged her to develop her ability so she sought out Ray Lyell, a well known recording artist and vocal coach in Hamilton Ont. Ray worked on vocal technique and recording with Ally and told her she had to learn to play the guitar. “That was the best thing that happened to me.” Ally says, “My musicality really took off and I was able to start writing my own songs.”
Ray also convinced her to go to Nashville to the Radio Broadcast Seminar where she was inspired to make music her career. “It’s an amazing feeling to be standing in the same Honky Tonks as the artists I admire. I decided to build a recording studio in my garage where I began the legwork for my debut album, Ride of Your Life.”
The songs on this album are based on life, the stuff that happens to all of us at one time or another. Ally has drawn on not only her own experiences but others that she knows as well. “That’s how I try to write my songs. They are all from real life and tell a little piece of someone’s story.”
In 2008, Ally entered her album in the New Country 95.3 Big Break contest, became a finalist and won the competition. From there she moved on to play at 95.3’s Canada Day Jam concert in Toronto, opening for The Higgins, Crystal Shawanda, Deric Ruttan and Johnny Reid. She then went on to perform at the Fergus Truck show where she again shared the stage with Aaron Pritchett and Gord Bamford. She has also graced the stage at the Cayuga Speedway, Caledonia Old Mill Concert Series, many fundraisers and fairs and has played live on the New Country 95.3, co hosting the morning show with Lea Cater.
Ally’s inspiration comes from artists like Terri Clark, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire and the Higgins, Aaron Pritchett and Emerson Drive. “Anyone that writes a great song or performs it with conviction is an inspiration to me.”
Ally is excited about what the future holds for her. She loves to perform, to connect and share stories with her audience but, as she will tell you, more than anything and above all else…Ally is a country music fan over and over.
