Details:
San Francisco Bay Area trumpeter Christy Dana is a bandleader, composer, performer, and teacher. On her new CD, Merry-Go-Round, Christy plays adventurous straight-ahead jazz with some of the Bay Area''s finest musicians. Merry-Go-Round delivers six catchy original tunes along with expressive standards such as Darn That Dream and Alone Together. "I seem to have a knack for writing melodic hooks that stay in your head," says Dana, "which helps the listener relate to the complexity of jazz." Dana spins long threads of melodic lyricism, the perfect foil for pianist Bevan Manson''s virtuosity and clever rhythmic shifts.
As a performer, Christy has appeared in concert at the San Jose Jazz Festival, KCSM''s Jazz on the Hill, UC Berkeley, the Jazzschool, the Berkeley Arts Festival, and many other music venues in the Bay Area. She was a Resident Artist at the Banff Centre for the Arts Jazz Workshop and performed nightly at the Vancouver (B.C.) International Jazz Orchestra Workshop. Christy is also a member of the Montclair Women''s Big Band and is a featured soloist on the Band''s upcoming CD, to be released in 2004.
Active as well in the classical music scene, Christy has played modern trumpet with the Women''s Philharmonic, Orchestra Sonoma, the Napa Valley, Vallejo, Monterey, California, and Santa Cruz Symphonies, and has toured all of the UC campuses with the contemporary music group, the Empyrean Ensemble. On the natural trumpet, she has performed early music with Jubilate, Magnificat, and the Orchestra of the Renaissance. "I love going from a Bach B minor Mass performance, to a Montclair Women''s Big Band gig, to a performance of my own quartet, CDQ. The variety keeps me fresh."
A dedicated and gifted teacher, Christy has taught musicianship and jazz theory at the University of California at Berkeley since 1987, and at the Jazzschool since its inception in 1997. She holds degrees in brass and music theory from DePauw University (B.M.) and Indiana University (M.M., D.M.). She has studied jazz with David Baker, John McNeil, and Mark Levine, and trumpet with Bill Adam, Charles Gorham, and Laurie Frink.
