Sadhana Kalpana is a singer and teacher of Hindustani classical music living in the Boston area. She was born in 1943 in Bhagalpur, Bihar, India. She began learning music as a young child from her mother, who was a singer. From this early stage of artistic development, she learned to use pure sound for mental, emotional, and physical healing. At the age of nine, she began formal training under Sri Shiv Shankar Prasad. She obtained her music degree (Sangit Visharad) from the Bhatkhande Sangit
Vidyapith, Luknow. Her family moved to Kolkata, Bengal in the mid-1950s. When she was in her early twenties, her elder brother, the late Pranab Mazumder, took her to see Ustad Amir Khan, master of the Kirana Gharana. Ustad Amir Khan accepted her as a disciple and placed her with Pt. Usha Ranjan Mukherjee, with whom she studied for over two decades. She came to the United States in 1973. In the 1980s, she taught Hindustani classical music as part of the summer program on healing through music held at the
Abode of the Message Sufi Community Center in upstate New York. Sadhana Kalpana has given several public performances all over the United States and recorded two previous albums. She continues to teach privately and
offer lecture/demonstrations on Hindustani classical music.
