Who am I? Martin Neal Reamy. Now that you got that here''s something important to know about me. I make music to help me live! It is the ultimate release for me. I have explored many facets of this thing we call music, but I always come back to square one. The feeling it gives me.
I started with a band called Jazz Poets Society(1996). We were a collective of poets and musicians who combined to create a place for ideas to grow. We toured pretty good for 3 years and I was able to meet and perform with some of my inspirations, the Roots, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, The Last Poets, and Saul Williams. We traveled all over the U.S., mostly colleges. We performed on BET & had a video on the BOX. Unfortunately, we were not able to stay together although we were gaining popularity but that is another story. What that experience taught me was no matter how popular you get there is still a need to be free. Music became secondary with that situation and I decided to take my love into my own hands. I left the group and began working on my own music. I realized without music I was just making money with a bunch of guys. My survival was not solely based on income. I needed to create. I found refuge in my own work. Being able to take these feelings and put them towards something creative built confidence. Which lead me here, talking about myself in order to share my work.
This particular piece of work is called THE HIATUS or as some of my friends like to call it THE HIGH ATE US. Either way this is a "musical" about my journey from here to where I am capable of going. It parallels the book "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse. A story of a young man who decided he must find out for himself what "this" is all about. Each song is a chapter that deals with each step I''ve taken. Musically I relied on what I knew best, the groove. I played the majority of the music myself, with the help of some very talented friends. I created all of it in my studio apartment over the span of three years. I wanted to set a mood unlike most of the hip hop that I had been listening to. I guess more importantly, I was feeling the ideas I was coming up with, so why ignore it.
Now here''s some facts.
TRACK 2 "the hiatus" has my friend Lee Graham playing guitar and he plays bass "on the second half". My friend Anthony Bryant is the DJ and is doing all the cuts and scratches for the entire record.
TRACK 3 "learning to walk" features my friend Carl Williamson Jr. rhyming and he also came up with the concept.
TRACK 6 "february" has my friend Colin(sorry Colin I don''t know how to spell your last name)Mcenearny playing guitar. Very beautifully I might add.
TRACK 7 "mercury venus" was all Colin, bass, keys, and guitar. I just did the beat.
Well there you go. A little bit of love for ya. Enjoy!
