In the back room of Papa John’s Pizza in Springfield Tennessee, co-workers Derrick Spurlock and Jeff Wall would stay after the business had closed. Both musicians and songwriters they would get out the flat tops and sing songs they had written. Soon the two of them realized that they should take it to the next level and start a band. Lead singer Derrick has a voice as big as his 6’4” frame. With a strong southern accent he recalls. “I’ve always been around music and I love to sing. I can remember nights when I was just a child and my daddy would come home from work and sit on the front porch swing, playing his guitar and singing. Hell my daddy is still playing in a bluegrass band today.” Working in Springfield, Derrick calls nearby Greenbrier Tennessee his home. Jeff lives in Hendersonville a little farther away and closer to the Nashville metroplex. Jeff would take on the duties of the bass guitar and continue to write. Next they needed a drummer and Lee Darby was Jeff’s first choice. “Lee and I have known each other our entire lives so it would seem,” exclaims Jeff. “We were founding members in the critically acclaimed band Fluid Tuesday, an alternative rock band from Nashville.” The three of them began getting together over at Lee’s house and playing in the garage. Lee states, “I’ve always played the drum’s, I guess it’s in my roots.” Half Native American Indian Lee sports a Mohawk, a visual testimony to his proud heritage. The trio felt like there was something missing and wanted to add another guitar. Next to join was Lee’s friend and guitarist Dave Rank. A seasoned musician Rank is a member of the band Milkbone, an Allman Brothers tribute band that has entertained college frat parties across the Midsouth for a decade. “I’ve had this dream of playing in a band with my brother again,” says Dave “and to tell the truth when Lee called me and wanted me to join I had already included him.” Andy Rank had just recently moved to Tennessee living with his brother in Goodlettsville. The two of them have been playing guitars since they were teenagers. Andy was playing in bars with his brother when he was sixteen, having to sneak in the back door to play, and later that night to get in the house, “ the first time I heard the name of the band I looked at my brother and said, that fits,” admits Andy. Derived from the name of a street that Derrick’s family lives on in Cedar Hill Tennessee. A new southern rock band, Buzzard Creek had formed. With their freshman effort Suped Up Redneck now out of the studio, the music has a genuine southern sound. Slow Ballads like, Won’t Hurt At All, and Back When You Love Me are felt with real emotion that is rarely heard in this digital evolution. In your face tunes like the title track, Suped Up Redneck, and Live It Up are sure to be favorites, along with the toe tapping Shakes Her Tattoo, a light hearted look at modern dance. Released on July 4th 2008 the CD has 12 songs that are written and performed from the heart. A new band with a southern sound has arrived. Like their logo, the band is spreading its wings and taking flight. Looks like that traditional southern rock sound from the south is alive and well in Tennessee!
