Details:
Miena was born and grew up in a small town called Samga, in South Korea. Samga was surrounded by beautiful mountains and a river, the Yangcheon, where she used to swim in the summer and skate in the winter. Miena''s dad was a veterinarian, and she accompanied him, going from farm to farm curing sick animals. Her mother was an assistant nurse at Miena''s dad''s clinic, and she was active in her hometown church choir. Miena used to sing with her mother in the church children''s group. Miena immigrated to the United States from South Korea in 1992.
In August 2006, Miena was a featured artist in the Spark episode, "Steppin" Out," on KQED public Television. She was also interviewed with Joe Sonja, Radio Station KKUP 91.5FM in November. Since 2006, Miena has been a feautred musician enriching the cultural mix for Bread & Roses, a Non-profit organization, at venues throughout the Bay Area.
Miena’s music is deeply rooted in her experiences as a child growing up in rural Korea, a childhood world in which family members were role models and trees, wildlife, and the river were central characters. In 2006 Miena released her first CD, At the River Again, in which she weaves Korean and English phrases and images together to create captivating musical vignettes of her childhood memories. Her second CD, A Little Stone on the Sidewalk, released in 2008, builds on the themes and styles established on her earlier work. Although inspired by the brilliant work of artists such as Tracy Chapman and Lucinda Williams, Miena has forged a sound and style all her own.
In the midst of a busy playing schedule and work on her next album, Miena remains focused on giving back to the surrounding community; entertaining at veterans'' hospitals, elderly centers and the UCSF Cancer Center. She shows that individuals still care for people who often feel forgotten and alone. Miena donates all proceeds from her 1st album to stray animal rescue efforts.
Miena hopes to share her stories with you through her music. Please pick up copies of her CDs, At the River Again and Little Stone on the Sidewalk, and let her unique, intimate style and distinctive voice touch your heart and carry you to places new and
long-cherished.
