Details:
Courtyards and Fairgrounds is a collection of Mr. Reid’s compositions that evoke the sound of the Medieval and Renaissance eras.
In spite of the learned aspect of some of the pieces, none is meant to be didactic. Many moods are presented here: from tranquility to vivaciousness, from beatific to voluptuousness. In short, they are presented here as a music to be listened to for pleasure.
The pieces were originally created from 1992 to 1998 partly for use as theatrical music, partly as exercises to exhibit Mr. Reid’s knowledge of historical styles. They are presented here, re-orchestrated and rearranged for modern classical and near east instruments with an emphasis on winds, percussion and plucked instruments.
The pieces were created using a mix of traditional and modern compositional methods. Some use authentic musical techniques and forms common from the twelfth to sixteenth century. You may hear echoes of Perotin, de Vitry, Machaut, Dufay and Palestrina. Other pieces are more contemporary meditations on the sounds of those ages where elements of popular acoustic and instrumental film music are used.
Mr. Reid studied medieval composition with Andrew Hughes, Renaissance composition with Alexander Rapoport and contemporary composition with Walter Buczynski at the University of Toronto. He currently lives in Toronto where he is the musical director for The Second City comedy theatre.
