Greetings traveler! And welcome to Blair Country, home of the Blair Family History project, where bluegrass music, narrative, period photos and original artwork combine to create a historical account about the Blairs, a family whose roots and ties to Nashville, Tennessee can be traced all the way back to the early 1700’s. Stories about the rise and fall of this family capture the imagination of Virginia Blair’s son (that would be me), a contemporary relative living in New York, who is compelled to go back to his birthplace to manage the estate of his uncle Wuckle, who has lost his mind.
What I find is a house and its moldering contents, and stories – lots of them. There are manuscripts and letters from Blairs to Tuckers, Pirtles to Peeks – one describes how John Blair was scalped and stomped by Indians in the early settler days. As I rummage, I come across locks of my own hair – neatly labeled in little glassine envelopes – “Billy at 2 months”, “cuttings at 9 years”. Also letters and postcards – to me, from me, about me … my own place in the Blair family lineage neatly catalogued. After all these years the search for my identity appears to be over: My relationship to my mother and her family finally once and for all, laid to rest.
Twenty-two years go by, as I manage my uncle’s affairs, live my life and develop my own history. This collection of songs and stories is a synthesis of Blair narratives, childhood recollections and the journey that re-connects me with my own past.
The music features myself on banjo and vocal harmonies. Others include such well-known artists as Kenny Kosek (fiddle), Andy Falco (guitar, mandolin) and Ron Feinberg (fiddle), in addition to members of Eastbound Freight Blugrass Band.
