-NORTHSTAR
The rap game knows a lot of survivors and the best MCs translate the pure energy of their struggle into their music. A. Harrison p.k.a. NorthStar and sometimes pompously proud, sometimes humble, introspective, and always poignant. NorthStar''s music is moving - the poetry of struggle set to a beat that hits home. His lyrics speak to the headstrong, the heartbroken, and everyone who has gotten into a tussle with life and come out the victor.
Born on April 11th, 1980, NorthStar was raised by his grandmother, in the Bedford Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, after his mother disappeared when he was 7 years old and his father was incarcerated on several felony charges. NorthStar walked the straight and narrow for several years, but as he entered 7th grade, his grandmother fell sick and he was forced to move to Atlanta to live with his father, now released from prison, and stepmother. Without his grandmother''s watchful eye, the street slowly began to permeate NorthStar''s world
Later that year, his grandma passed away - she was found on a train in NYC, victim of a heart attack. Already slipping into the grip of the street life, this was a huge shock to NorthStar''s emotions and he did whatever he could to vent his sadness and rage - drinking heavily, smoking weed, having sex with as many women as he could, but found the most direct route to his self-expression was in his poetry, which eventually evolved to hip-hop lyrics. NorthStar received his namesake from a friend who was particularly touched by his lyrics in cipher battles, and thus named him in honor of the guiding star that shines in the night sky.
NorthStar''s music speaks to the emotions and experiences of a young man growing up engrossed in the streets. Fluctuating feelings about his life spice his lyrics, often attacking beats and laying down his own personal truths - about his family, his love for women, which is often at odds with his lust, his confidence and questioning about his social position as a black man in America and the simple reality of survival in the streets.
However bright NorthStar''s talent may be, his teenage years were rift with struggle. Before the age of 20, he had moved back to NYC without a place to live, began hustling for survival, lost several key members of his family to death, watched his father sink into drug addiction and fathered children of his own. However, his focus on and passion for his music never waived.
"It was meant for me to become a man at a young age ... regardless of what happened - even if I strayed away from music for a minute, it always popped back up, right in my face, like this is what you do..." He explains.
Bouncing from friends house to house, he eventually crossed paths with Delton "Millz" Washington, a childhood friend who was managing Biv 10/Universal artist and child rapper, Shortee Red. Millz brought some order to NorthStar''s life, turning random spur of the moment decisions into smart business moves. Together they complimented each other''s style, looking to advance their collective efforts and dusting each other off when they stumbled. When Shortee Red was dropped from his label, they committed to continue working on both his project and NorthStar''s, despite what challenges might arise
Out of this commitment, they met with interest from Beat Street Records, the label arm of the old school DJ record shop. Producer Clark Kent began to focus his attention on NorthStar''s project and together with Millz and the staff, recruited other hot producers, including Ty Fyffe, Rashaun Smith, DJ Rad and Goldfingaz to lay down tracks. The outcome is a record which is both mature and touching, banging and sexy, a classic in the vein of Nas and Jay-Z''s early work. But above that, NorthStar''s record speaks to the struggle of being young in the world, regardless of upbringing and inspires hope and confidence that fledgling spirits are not alone.
