Random Access Orkestra is the brainchild of Conor Dowling, who functions as the bassist/composer/synth and beat mangler for the collective. RAO combines Dowling''s love of such diverse genres as world music, electronica, 20th century classical, and forward-looking rock stylings into a cohesive whole.
Shards of jungle, dub, illbient, and trip hop collide with Balinese gamelan, Turkish, renaissance, funk, and angular rock approaches. The results sound organic and unforced.
RAO has a floating membership consisting here of Dowling and frequent collaborators Matte Henderson (guitarist and beatcrafter extraordinaire), Doug Raneri (drums/percussion), and dBrown (supplemental synth), along with other support players.
Dowling has cited many heroes and guiding lights in his musical pantheon, including luminaries such as Bill Laswell, Brian Eno, Morton Feldman, King Crimson, Sly and Robbie, John Cage, Tony Levin, Fred Frith, Mick Karn, David Torn, Charles Ives, DJ Spooky, Lee Scratch Perry, and others. He cites his studies in Balinese gamelan and Turkish classical music at Simon''s Rock College, and composition with Lou Harrison, and electronic music with David Rosenboom at Mills College as contributing to his particular voice and approach.
