Details:
Spyro and John met in early 2002 at a bar in Brooklyn, NY. Spyro was a bass player from Bay Ridge and had once applied to appear on the first season of the Real World. John hailed from outside of Pittsburgh and had come to NYC to do anything but sell cosmetics, which of course naturally he was doing.
Per the insistence of one of his enumerators from when he was a crew chief for the 2000 Census, John was playing an open mic. Spyro was very drunk, which was not unusual. After hearing the act he approached John and said - "shnyou know whatz - youz neesd a band muzzerrr fackher." Spyro then passed out and was carried to the gutter. Thus things got started.
They began to meet in various spaces in the five boroughs to practice and hash out songs, John writing the words and music, and Spyro wanting to add handclaps and kazoos to everything. With the addition of Scott Nutting on drums and Gary Miles on lead guitar, they briefly formed the band The Murkins. Unfortunately within a year the band disbanded due to "love." Seriously, everyone in the band except John fell in love which resulted in them moving away, including Spyro.
Luckily, Spyro only moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and through short trips on the L train, John and Spyro continued their musical experiemnt, performing at a variety of different open mics throughout the metropolitan area. They continued to search for a drummer, and though they received their share of compliments ("you guys are the most offensive music act I''ve ever seen... loved it!), they began to tire of sitting through poor renditions of Bob Dylan covers and 17 minute mandolin solos.
Finally they met Steve - a nice guy - a good drummer and a fixer of broken refrigerator compressors. It was about time because Spyro''s girlfriend was about to be institutionalized after having witnessed one too many open mics. Steve likes to shoot things and has been quoted as saying "Motherf***ers stole my canned air!" (long story for another time).
Finally with a drummer secured, the band took on the name Girl To Gorilla, a moniker championed by Spyro as it was a vaudeville act that had once appeared in James Bond film. They began to play frequently in NYC bars and clubs like Otto''s Shrunken Head, Arlene''s Grocery, and Don Hills to name a few and quickly garnered a reputation as a totally original power pop trio known for tight live performances and provocative songs.
Now, at times on stage and in the studio with Simon (guitars/keyboard), Amalia (viola), and Lynne Von (vocals), along with the patient hand at GigLizzy Studios, the three gentlemen are more than pleased to present their debut album, Super Deluxe Custom Experience. Here''s hoping you find it to be just that.
