Laura Dreyer, a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, has been a dynamic member of the New York jazz scene since her arrival in 1982.

A composer and bandleader, she is also in great demand as a side-musician in a variety of settings. Her original music fuses elements of her experience in jazz, Brazilian, funk, and rock, creating a unique contemporary palette of sound from which come fresh, exciting solos and a wide array of textures.

A prolific composer, Laura writes material for her band and contributes to the repertoires of many others with whom she works. Her current group, a Brazilian-jazz ensemble named "Mysterious Encounter", opened for David Sanborn at the 2000 Syracuse Jazz Festival and performed at the "Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival" at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in May of 2001.

In addition, her group has performed at many of New York''s top clubs, including Birdland, Le Bar Bat, Sete MOMA, El Taller Latino Americano, Caviarteria, Europa Cafe, and many others. Laura has also performed with various bands at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, the Village Vanguard, 7th Ave. South, S.O.B.''s, and the Hartford Jazz Festival, in addition to touring Europe and Japan. Laura is featured on Hendrik Meurkens'' s recording "Poema Brasileiro" (Concord Jazz) , on Brazilian bassist Rogerio Botter Maio''s release "Crescendo," on both of DIVA''s CDs (Perfect Sound) , and the newly released album from "Fiveplay" (Arbors) entitled "On the Brink."

Audiences have also heard Laura in the bands of Dr. Billy Taylor, Rufus Reid and Akira Tana, Walter Bishop, Jr., Bishop Norman Williams, Mel Lewis, Robert Palmer, Nnenna Freelon, and Brazilian pianist Dom Salvador. In the summer of 2000 she performed in the Broadway Show "Five Guys Named Moe" for a 6 week tour of Cyprus and in 1999, in the national tour of the Duke Ellington tribute "Hit Me With a Hot Note" which starred Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr.

Laura was a member and contributing arranger of the big band DIVA for six years where she played tenor sax and lead alto sax. With DIVA she performed at Tavern on the Green, the IAJE conference, Pori Jazz Festival, Berlin Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival,The Blue Note New York, Newport Jazz Festival, and the Kennedy Center.

The band also backed up such artists as Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Dave Brubeck, Jack Jones, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Rebecca Parris, Maurice Hines, Diane Schuur, Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, and many others. In 1995 Laura was invited to perform in Monterey, California with Brazilian percussionist Helcio Milito and pianist Weber Drummond where she was featured as a flutist in addition to her saxophone work.

The National Endowment has three times awarded Laura grants in performance and professional jazz study/composition. She was a participant in BMI''s composition program conducted by trombonist/composer Bob Brookmeyer, and four of her songs have received honorable mention in "Billboard" magazine''s songwriting https://www.tradebit.comra is currently a featured writer in the Saxophone Journal , where she expresses her thoughts and insights about the many aspects of life as a musician.

Laura''s musical education began in 1979 when she received a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There she had the opportunity to study with noted music educators Andy McGee, Joe Viola, John LaPorta, and many others. In addition, Laura has studied privately with saxophone greats Joe Henderson and Joe Lovano, and she has studied composition with composers Lyle Mays and Jim McNeely. She is active in music education as well and has served on the faculties of the Jamey Aebersold jazz clinics, Cazedero Music and Arts Camp, and the New York Pops Salute to Music program. In 1984, Laura conducted a jazz seminar at the University of Madrid and lead her own group on a 5-week tour of Spain. Currently, she teaches privately and regularly does clinics at high schools and colleges.

Laura Dreyer continues to tell original stories with her music, working steadily in the New York area with her own group, and in a variety of contexts with others. In short, she is an innovative and talented musician, deservedly making her way into the jazz spotlight.
