Details:
It''s the rare country album that references Bikini Kill in its first three minutes, but that''s the type of hybrid album country-punk group Chokecherry has created. The self-described "insurrectionist old-timey" band is releasing their first full-length album, titled "In the Wine Press (human grapes sing not nor dance).” Named after a William Blake poem, "In the Wine Press" contains 16 tracks and clocks in at almost an hour.
Vaguely reminiscent of classic country like Gram Parsons and contemporary punk bands like This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, Chokecherry''s sound is defined by anthemic choruses, twangy, rhythm guitar and dramatic violin. Song subjects range from war and capitalist alienation to ballads of self-doubt, self-destruction and paralyzed love. Old-timey jigs such as “Work Will Never Set You Free,” and “Teargas and Whiskey,” are accented by nostalgic romance in tracks like “Goodbye Wide Open Spaces” and “Moon Is On the River.”
Chokecherry has been playing since 2005, when they released their six-song E.P., "Pigs Eye and the Many-Headed Hydra." In that time, they''ve paid their dues on the floors of D.I.Y. show spaces, in the corners of dank basements, and on the worn stages of bars across the Midwest and South. Recently, Chokecherry also released a split 7" record with fellow Minneapolis band, The Knotwells.
The artwork for "In the Wine Press" was done by artist Emily Larson. It blends the stencil aesthetic of 80s anarcho-punk bands like Crass with a slew of apocalyptic Minneapolis references, as well as a shout out to the Replacements "Let It Be" album.
