“The Music of Seaside Shakespeare” contains music from “Wit and Wisdom of Will’s Women” and “Twelfth Night” composed by Kim D. Sherman, with words by William Shakespeare. These are melodic settings of some of Shakespeare’s most beloved poetry and lyrics, with original incidental music written for voices, piano and violin. Both scores were written for Seaside Shakespeare productions on Nantucket Island, for which Sherman is composer-in-residence.
Founded by Susan McGinnis in 2003, Seaside Shakespeare presents creative productions utilizing the talents of both visiting and local artists and musicians in indoor and outdoor venues in Nantucket, Massachusetts.
Productions to date have included three incarnations of the company’s original piece, “Wit and Wisdom of Will''s Women,” which was created and performed in 2003 then re-staged for two more productions in 2006. Next, the company presented “Twelfth Night” during the summer and autumn of 2007. The show was directed by Lisa Rothe and Tom Butler with music by Kim D. Sherman. In February, 2008, Seaside Shakespeare created its first annual “Un-Valentine Cabaret” at its unofficial Nantucket home, The Chicken Box, where the company had previously staged two well-received benefit performances of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues.” During the summer of 2008, Seaside Shakespeare performed “Much Ado About Nothing,” at Nantucket''s Children''s Beach directed by Rusty Owen, and once again, with an original score by Kim D. Sherman.
