Details:
The Black Label Sessions are a set of recording made by Little Sparta with Mike Patrick over three sessions in 2006. Exploring stripped back country-folk-blues delivered in an immediate and visceral style was the aim with most of the tracks pulled together in a few hours then recorded live with as little production as possible.
Instrumental versions of some tracks are used in the documentary ''Carts of Darkness'' (NFB 2008) by the Vancouver filmaker Murray Siple alongside bands such as Vetiver, Ladyhawk & Black Mountain.
Little Sparta is the band of writer and producer Alan Boyd. As a band they have released albums independently, on Grey Gallery Records and on Fire Records while also having produced songs for film & television.
The bands sound brings to mind artists such as the Dirty Three, The Rachels and Ennio Morricone. The influences range from American country-blues to avant-garde minimalist composers; post-rock to kraut-rock; Bach to the Beatles.
