Details:
“American Broadway Songs With A Classy Avant Garde Touch” became the trademark of Nashville-based vocalist Jill Walsh and New York-pianist Mika Pohjola at the turn of the millenium. Ms. Walsh and Mr. Pohjola met in Boston in the early 90''s, and started making frequent appearances with their off-off repertory at The Knitting Factory, New York’s stronghold of left-off-the-center creations. Appearing as so-called mainstream artists, Ms. Walsh and Mr. Pohjola defied the usual definitions of “new” and “free” by going in the opposite direction.
This duo proudly performs classics by Cole Porter, Dmitri Tiomkin and Richard Rodgers, not to forget Elvis Costello. Ms. Walsh’s and Mr. Pohjola’s repertoire contains songs which are forgotten by many jazz musicians. It is the contrast between Ms. Walsh’s heartfelt yet simple vocal stylings and Mr. Pohjola’s lush harmonies which makes the duo and this album particularly fresh and a truly special one.
A First Taste of Honey is their first recording, which is followed by the well-received album, Two for the Road. Listen: https://www.tradebit.com

JILL WALSH
Vocalist
Jill Walsh is from Portland, Oregon and is currently living in Nashville, TN. She moved to Nashville in 2005 after living in New York City as a successful performing singer/songwriter and jazz vocalist.
Jill is a modern songwriter with a gift for beautiful melodies and a voice as pure as the Pacific Northwest. Backed by some of New York''s and Nashville''s finest musicians, Jill''s own compositions bring a sense of musicianship and integrity that is sometimes missing in today''s music.
A musician since the age of four, Jill has shared the stage and studio with Shawn Colvin, Jessica Simpson and she is featured on the top 5 single (BBC Radio 1) "Breathe", which is from the album Nightbird by Erasure. Her debut solo album was produced by Steve Walsh whose credits include productions with Erasure, Fil Izler, and Amy Atchley.
Jill''s vast parallel career as a jazz vocalist has been documented on recordings with some of today''s most established jazz musicians, most notably guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, saxophonist Chris Cheek, drummer Jorge Rossy and pianist Michael Kanan. During her years in New York City, she was in the prestigious faculty of the New School and New York University jazz programs.
