It features Tom''s unique song writing style coupled with The Mission''s intricate vocal performances and their eclectic instrumentation, to create a truly interesting and enjoyable album. If you are looking for something different, then The Ultimate Distraction is what you1re searching for.
Tom Kell and The Mission draw from numerous styles to create their own sound. Listening to the album, you will hear the folk, country, bluegrass, and rock influences that shape The Mission. Lyrically, you will hear the influence of the great hymn writers of generations past. Tom has masterfully integrated lyrics that flow and sound as if they could have been written a hundred years ago with song stylings that cross every generation.
The Mission is led by Tom Kell, an accomplished singer-songwriter originally from Seattle. Tom''s song writing has spanned nearly four decades and has yielded songs not only covered by artists like Kenny Rogers and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, but also landed Tom a recording contract with Warner Brothers. His song "Walk Away" was on a Kenny Rogers album that went gold in 1990. Tom has had the pleasure of working with musicians like J.D. Souther, Karla Bonoff, Russ Kunkel, and Bob Gloub to name a few.
Joining Tom and known as The Mission is an eclectic group of musicians as you will find who have helped shape The Mission''s unique sound. Playing lead guitar and mandolin is Kenny Edwards. Kenny has been on the music scene nationally since the late sixties starting with the Stone Poneys, a band he started with a young Linda Ronstadt and Bob Kimmel. Kenny spent years touring, playing, and arranging with Linda Ronstadt and working with the likes of Warren Zevon, Don Henley, and others while producing Karla Bonoff. In addition, Kenny performs and produces Bryndle with Karla and Wendy Waldman.
Rounding out the instrumentation for The Mission is Jim Wille on bass and Phil Helfer on drums and percussion. Jim has been on the Southern California music scene since 1978. His band experience includes founding and playing in such bands as The Peptones, Spaaz, The New Offensive, and Raizing Cain (which had an underground hit in Orange County "Tell Me Why" penned by Jim). Phil has been playing drums in bands and worship teams in Southern California for the last thirty years. He has the reputation (and ability) to take just about anything and make some type of percussion instrument out of it (check out the box used on the track "Open The Gates of Prayer").
One of the most intriguing aspects of The Mission is the vocal arrangements performed by Lori Helfer, Roger Keast, and Marc McNeely. Lori hails from a musical family and has many years of experience singing with various music groups and bands both nationally and internationally. She also has been a part of numerous recordings and has done many solo performances throughout California. Roger is a singer-songwriter and front man for The Roger Keast Band. Roger is not only an accomplished vocalist but also plays a wide variety of instruments with credits including appearing on the latest Skypark album and jazz choir performances on the tonight show backing Garth Brooks. Marc wears many hats with The Mission. Not only does Marc provide vocal backing, he also produced The Ultimate Distraction and shapes the band''s sound at concerts. Marc has had many years experience touring with vocal groups throughout this country and internationally.
Tom Kell and The Mission is a truly amazing band with its unique vocal blend and interesting instrumentation. These attributes coupled with the excellent song writing makes The Ultimate Distraction a must have album.
