Lazy Thursday (Relaxed Swing)
A tribute to Harry Nillson and his song “Thursday’s Such A Crazy Lazy Day”. That song made me look at Thursdays differently. “Lazy Thursday” is my contribution to the corpus of Thursday songs.
Brakes Are Bad (Fast Even 8th’s feel)
Written in memory of all the crappy cars I’ve owned and survived.
Girl from Ipanema (Jazz Ballad)
The Jobim standard done as a jazz ballad, and sung by my wife Didi.
La Venta (Medium Even 8th’s feel)
La Venta is a beautiful historic property in the Malaga Cove section of Rancho Palos Verdes. I’ve played a lot of weddings there over the years, and I’m always overwhelmed by it’s beauty.
Rives Park (Bright 7/8)
Rives Park is named after a lovely park near my house with unusually grand trees. Since early childhood, I’ve fantasized about having a tree house. I still indulge in those fantasies. The 7/8 ascending figures in this tune have a pleasant “climbing” feel.
Dad’s Andante (Jazz Ballad)
A song recalling childhood memories of my father and his love of jazz and blues, “Dad’s Andante” is written in the style of Count Basie, a fellow mid-westerner.
Up & Free (80’s World Jazz)
Originally written for Bongo-Logic, “Up & Free” combines irregular phrases and pretty chords, and echoes the 80’s sounds I listened to back in those days.
Adjusted Viewpoint (Medium Swing)
This is song about what it feels like to come around to another point of view. For some, coming around to another point of view is very difficult if not impossible. When it happens to me, I sometimes see it as a gift.
Lush Life (Bright Even 8th’s)
The Billy Strayhorn standard, beautifully sung by Didi.
Didi’s Lament (Medium Jazz Waltz)
A pretty composition paying tribute to pianist Bill Evans, and featuring our pianist, Joe Rotondi.
Phat Rag (Fast Swing)
Not a very long head, but kind of hard to play, Phat Rag is a fast swing written using a 7 beat repeated figure to create a rhythmic trick called a “Hemiola”.
