MP3 Julia Schechtman Pabst - Psalms and Prophets (classical sacred songs from the Scriptures)
Striking mix of melodic 20th century songs for soprano and piano. A joyous opener that takes off like a racehorse, a powerful end, and all moods of holiness in between. A light, operatic voice sings texts from Psalms, Ruth, Isaiah, Jeremiah. "Thrilling."

"Pure, thrilling beauty of voice. At once deeply meditative and joyous." (L. Gott) - amazon review for Julia Schechtman Pabst CD ''Lilies and Simple Gifts''
Julia Schechtman has sung in various European opera houses. Her expressive, distinctive soprano, tender pianissimi and brilliant high notes, have been heard in roles such as Gilda in Rigoletto, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos, Adina in L''Elisir d''amore, and others. In her CDs, however, she turns to her favorite sacred songs.
On Bösendorfer is Saul Schechtman, conductor of the tv series Omnibus, chamber orchestra Orchestra Piccola, guest conductor with theater and radio orchestras in Germany, Holland, Scandanavia, and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
''Psalms and Prophets'' is a compilation of songs whose texts derive exclusively from the Hebrew Scriptures. Specifically, the texts and stories are from the books of Psalms, Ruth, Chronicles, Isaiah, and Jeremiah.
This CD''s individual dynamic is -- dynamic. Late-20th century songs are each balanced by an earlier piece of contrasting style and mood, and the result is a perfect fit of song to song. It''s an exciting listen, from the first piece that resembles a joyous sprint out of the starting gate, to the last song of power and affirmation.
SCHECHTMAN COMPOSITIONS
Particularly featured are the dramatic, multi-faceted works of Saul Schechtman -- works that stand up to repeated listenings and continue to reveal new depths. Like all great pieces, they grow on you. Reviewers comment:
"[Psalm 23] a truly unified (and exciting) composition that ...has to be heard in its entirety. What an ending! `The Song of Ruth'' is also a great, moving song."
"I was surprised how much I was moved by this new version of Psalm 23- whereas I had felt weary of that particular psalm by too long acquaintance, here it seemed fresh and revivified, and I could recapture its real meaning of comfort again."
And although perhaps atypical for the Schechtman musical style, his opener, ''Psalm in Sync," is infused with energy and joy, as is ''Psalm 100,'' which reaches out and grabs you from the first chord.
This album is an intense, invigorating listening experience.
