Details:
Jazz pianist MBOYA NICHOLSON has been cheered from Brazil to Japan. His audiences have even the Ambassador to the Vatican. He has performed worldwide, from Guadeloupe to Italy. Nicholson spent seven years in New Orleans enjoying and embracing the music, traditions and heritage of the Crescent City. While studying at the University of New Orleans (UNO) he was under the tutelage of such jazz luminaries as pianist Ellis Marsalis and musician/
composer/producer Harold Battiste. Fortunate enough to learn from Marsalis and Battiste, Nicholson realized he was learning from two men partly responsible for the sound of post-war jazz in New Orleans. Their influence affected his improvisational style and compositions, resulting in a buoyant sound and colorful harmonic use.
Nicholson has shared the stage with jazz music’s veterans and young masters, including Sonny Fortune, Herlin Riley and Wes Anderson. As a jazz musician, Nicholson is conscious of the importance of exposing jazz to young audiences. His tribute concerts to iconic musicians like Sidney Bechet always attracted the attention. In Canada, the Francis Winspear Centre for Music requested he perform a jazz workshop for children at their grand opening gala. Currently, Nicholson teaches piano. In addition, he is preparing to record a suite "A Griot for Truth", composed in 1994.
