DOUG TALLEY, SAXOPHONE -- Doug Talley has performed with such jazz luminaries as Jay McShann, Clark Terry, Bob Mintzer, Karrin Allyson, Claude "Fiddler" Williams, Bobby Watson, Byron Stripling, Ignacio Berroa, Randy Brecker, Scott Robinson Gary Foster and Mike Vax. He is a familiar face throughout the Midwest as a jazz performer and educator. Formed in 1995, past performances of the Doug Talley Quartet include the Charlie Christian Jazz Festival, Deep Deuce Jazz Festival, Jazz in June (OK), Dallas Museum of Art, Joslyn Art Museum (NE), Elkhart (IN) Jazz Festival, Fontana Chamber Arts Series (MI), Jazz in the Woods (KS), and the St. Joseph (MO) and Topeka (KS) Jazz Workshops. Talley has also appeared at the 18th & Vine Festival, the Kansas City Jazz and Blues Festival, the Kansas City Spirit Festival, the Coleman Hawkins Jazz Festival, Mayport (FL) Jazz Festival, and in Las Vegas with The Four Freshman, The Platters and The Diamonds.
Talley is a Selmer saxophone artist and clinician and has worked with numerous college and high school music programs, including the University of Minnesota, University of Kansas, Coe College, Kalamazoo College, Kansas State University, University of Nebraska, University of South Dakota, Central Missouri State and Emporia State, among many others. Talley was a faculty member of the Great Plains Jazz Camp for twelve years, and was featured at the 1996 MENC convention in Kansas City directing the Shawnee Mission (Kansas) Honors Jazz Band. He served as a clinician at the 1997 International Association for Jazz Education conference and a faculty member of the IAJE Teacher Training Institute in 2003 and 2006. Honored by Kansas City magazine as one of the "40 Under 40 Who Move and Shake Kansas City in Business, Politics and the Arts," Talley was also recognized in Downbeat magazine "Auditions" in 1986. His discography includes four recordings on the Sea Breeze label for the Trilogy and Boulevard Big Bands as well as the Doug Talley Quartet''s four CDs, Town Topic -- "...reminiscent of the Modern Jazz Quartet." (Jam magazine), Night and Day – which received national airplay, Kansas City Suite – a musical depiction of the quartet’s hometown, and By Request, a collection of audience favorites. One of the Quartet’s latest projects include involves composing and performing a soundtrack to the Hitchcock silent film, The Lodger. WAYNE HAWKINS, PIANO -- Since returning from his music studies at the University of Miami in the 1980’s, Wayne has become one of Kansas City''s most in-demand keyboard artists. He has appeared with Grammy award-winner Diane Schuur, saxophonist Richie Cole, as well as the Kansas City Symphony and the Kansas City Camerata. He has also backed such legendary artists as Cab Calloway, George Burns, The Supremes and The Platters. In addition to recording with the Doug Talley Quartet, Wayne has two trio recordings under his own name, and has participated in countless projects in a variety of musical genres. Wayne''s original composition, Grandpeople, appears on the Doug Talley Quartet Town Topic CD, and his lyrical arrangement of Cole Porter''s I Concentrate On You was recorded the Doug Talley Quartet Night and Day CD.
TIM BREWER, BASS -- A graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Tim is a gifted composer and performer. He has performed and recorded with many artists, including Bobby Watson and Eddie Harris. Locally, he composes, arranges, performs and records with the Trilogy and Boulevard Big Bands, the New Kansas City Seven and Trinity Jazz Ensemble. Tim is an accomplished composer and arranger. His works, Carolyn and Transcending have been recorded by the Doug Talley Quartet.
KEITH KAVANAUGH, DRUMS -- Keith is a 1987 graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston where he studied drum set with Gary Chaffee and Joe Hunt, improvisational theory with Gary Burton, and ensemble performance with Herb Pomeroy and Donald Brown among others. He has performed with Diane Schuur, Phil Wilson, Joshua Breakstone, Scott Robinson and many musicians on the Kansas City jazz scene. Keith''s up-tempo arrangement of Cherokee, appears on the Doug Talley Quartet Town Topic CD, and his lyrical arrangement of Cole Porter''s I Love You was recorded the Doug Talley Quartet Night and Day CD In 1990 Keith graduated from Park University where he completed a degree in Painting and Graphic Design. He has paintings in the Sprint Corporation Art Collection and several private collections, and has designed more than 100 CD packages for musicians from coast-to-coast.
