Details:
"The Whirligig of Time" is the debut album of indie singer/songwriter Phil Dollard. The songs were all recorded at Woody''s House, Fred Gillen Jr.''s studio in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. in early 2008. The spirit of Woody Guthrie emanates from every corner of the place and hopefully, that spirit informs this album of mostly original songs; blues-based with a folksy feel, they are raw, real and relevant, without being topical. Although there are some historical markers, the songs manage to speak to the universal elements of the human condition: love, loss, the passage of time... but you''ll also find references to grapefruits, lunar eclipses, herbal shampoo and mean little poodles.
From the liner notes:
"These are tunes I''ve been playing recently. Some are old, some brand new. Most are originals; a few were written by artists I admire and whose work I''ve tried to emulate in the spirit of keeping the blues tradition alive. There''s a quote attributed to Oliver Wendell Holmes: ''Alas for those who never sing, But who die with their music in them.'' Well, there you go."
