Details:
Further along the road, the fourth album from Bristol-based band The Shrinks sees the popular seven-piece travelling even deeper into rootsy Avonicana; their own unique pigeonhole that helps to explain the genre-spanning music that is created “when the mighty Mississippi meets the muddy Avon”.
Based around the song writing of the band’s main singer and guitarist David Brown, the twelve numbers here go beyond the usual ‘meetin’, cheatin’ and retreatin’ song content to encompass a much wider palette of human experience, including an amusing take on the consequences of a celebrity lifestyle (Best destiny), forest fires (The Devil’s breath), the legacy of the 60s (Nobody listening), the first recordings of Country music legend Jimmie Rodgers (Bristol, Tennessee), living with obsessive compulsive disorder (Yeah, no) and even the joys of doing the laundry to your favorite music (Soul ironing) – the latter featuring an intensely soulful guest appearance by the renowned Celtic Jazz Saxophonist, Colin Tully.
It all adds up to an enjoyable (and unusual) amalgam of American-style roots music and west of England vernacular: Avonicana, in fact.
Other albums by The Shrinks:
Horfield to Hollywood (2000).
On the stoop (2001).
More damned lies (2003).
What the press say:
The shrinks play a lilting country headed by a voice oscillating between Levon Helm and John Hiatt. They’re clearly in love with the conventions of their chosen form, and well they might be -as long as there are bands like The Shrinks, the world is a better place.
