James Singleton has been a force on the New Orleans music scene for 30 years. He has performed and/or recorded with most of the top musicians and many of the top names from that town. A short list would include Gatemouth Brown, Professor Longhair, James Booker, Ellis Marsalis, Astral Project, Aaron Neville, 3NOW4, Dr. John, Harry Connick Jr.,Alex Chilton. He has also toured and played with a who''s who of international masters of jazz and improvised music. That list would include : Joe Henderson, Eddie Harris, Sonny Stitt, John Scofield, John Abercrombie, David Liebman, Carlos Malta, Jovinho Santos Neto, and many others.
Since the late 1990''s he has concentrated on leading his own ensembles. The String quartet was founded after concertizing in various contexts with the other players. Soon it was known that they played classical music together a lot and already had a great musical affinity. Matt Rhody and David Rebeck had both played in the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra before branching off into the amazing New Orleans improvisational/jazz scene. Helen Gillet was newer to town, but already making a big impact. Since the turn of the last century New Orleans string players have been improvising. Great New Orleans bassist George "Pops" Foster calimed in his autobiography that the very first improvising jazz bands were all strings! Of course the brass, reeds, and drums took over and quickly took it around the planet.
"Gold Bug Crawl," and "Lento" were composed specifically for the string quartet. The composition of the rest of the project was interrupted by the death of a beautiful 18-year-old pit bull ("Bulldog Run"), but it was decided to go ahead and finish this first disc with orchestrations of earlier pieces that have been recorded and performed by Astral Project and 3NOW4. Future projects are in the works including more prominant electronic alterations.
