MY MUSICAL TESTIMONY
As I write these words I look back a little over one year ago with no musical experience. It was at that time I felt God wanted me to start down a new road in my life. One where music was to be a key role. Much prayer and thought went into my decision. Shortly before my decision was made I remember hearing the voice of doubt so clear. “You’re wasting your time and your money. You don’t know what you’re doing and you won’t produce anything.” I thought about those words for two or three days and faith won on that day. I remember saying out loud to that voice of doubt, “yeah, I agree with you I don’t know what I’m doing, but I’m foolish enough to believe God will enable me to accomplish what He is calling me to do.
I went to the music store and purchased my first keyboard (I now have 3) and music recording software. As I was bringing all the gear into our house my wife watched me carry boxes of stuff upstairs into our spare bedroom. When I brought the keys in she looked at me and said, “that’s a keyboard!” “Yes it is” I replied. “But you don’t play the keyboard” she returned. “Not yet” was my answer.
The upcoming weekend was one that my wife was going to be away with the women of our church for what we call an advance. (We don’t like the idea of a retreat.) That was a weekend that changed my life. Friday night I started to practice playing chords. I bought the book that showed pictures of finger positions for the different chords. It felt so strange making my hands do something they never did before. My wife called that night to see how and what I was doing. “Practicing chords” I said. She laughed out loud. It was funny to her and somehow I saw the humor in it as well. My wife has played piano since she was quite young. I was not discouraged. The truth is at that moment it really was funny.
Saturday morning came-I ate breakfast and immediately when upstairs to the keyboard. That morning, in that room was myself, The Holy Spirit, and a keyboard. By lunchtime “Angel Keys” existed and I could play my first song. I stood there and cried. God is so good! My prayer to God was “let me hear heavens’ music and give me the ability to play it.” That evening I had a friend come over my house who is a keyboard player in our church band. I played for him for about 3 hours and for both of us the time flew by and was close to mid-night when he left. I looked at him at one point and said “I just wanted to let you know before last night I never played a chord. The expression on his face is a memorable one.
That night gets even more amazing. As I tried to sleep, somehow I found myself in what I’ll call heavens music room. I heard sound I could not believe. The beauty and complexity of it was overwhelming. I recall thinking, “oh lord, if this is the music you’re going to teach me, I have a lot of learning in front of me. In fact what I did hear I believe is beyond the ability of any human to compose or conduct. What struck me most was the complexity of it and yet somehow it flowed. There was no chaos in it. It was so thick, almost to the point of having physical substance. There has to be more than five senses in heaven. I just don’t have the words to describe in detail. The music we make on Earth does not compare with the music up there.
So here we are about one year after that with a finished CD. To me this is nothing short of a miracle. (As I write this the second CD is almost complete and will be released shortly. “Hope for troubled times” is its title. My desire is to produce music that gives JESUS praise, glory and honor. I’m looking forward to spending the rest of this life, as well as the one to come making music in Jesus name.
You might wonder about the two tracks “Good Energy” & “Euphoria”. To me these are what I would call “just for the fun of it”. I believe God is good and life is good and we were created to enjoy not only God’s presence but also the things he created. Perhaps the most spiritual thing we can do sometimes is have some fun.
I hope my story gives encouragement to someone who might find themselves on the threshold of a new path. If God is the one calling you-He is faithful! There’s nothing you can’t do through him. Praise you JESUS! God Bless you all!
