Details:
Aunt Helen exchanged grief for a mink coat. Rilke’s poems were wrapped around stones and arrived in the mail. The cutters and the fairies spent a few nights together in the forest. And Pfetsch, a mathematician who envisioned public health policy while listening to Rachmaninoff, had a lime green couch in front of a handcarved cherry coffee table, set at all times for tea.
These are some of the characters you will meet in the 17 stories that comprise the double-CD called The Green Couch And Other Stories. They are written and narrated by Brin Quell, with piano music by Mark Kelso.
Brin is a former arts reporter for public radio station WAMC-FM in Albany, New York, and the Times-Union Newspaper. She interviewed key individuals in the visual, performing and literary arts--including Toni Morrison, William Kennedy, Aaron Copland, Mark Morris and others. While in public radio, she also produced a weekly children’s radio program called “One Tale To Another,” that featured storytellers from around New England.
Earlier in her professional life, Brin taught creative dramatics and improvisation in schools and libraries after spending several years in San Francisco as an arts specialist with children and adults with disabilities. It was there, at the Recreation Center for the Handicapped, that she co-founded Theatre Unlimited in the 1970s. An improvisational theatre ensemble comprised of disabled and non-disabled adults, Theatre Unlimited has been instrumental for over 30 years in breaking down barriers across communities.
Many of the exercises and games used by the ensemble are included in Brin’s 100-page handbook, “Get Those People Moving,” published with the help of a CETA grant.
Pianist Mark Kelso is a composer and sound engineer with his own company, Muddy Angel Music. His work can be heard on solo albums and many recordings that are part of the Kripalu Center in Lenox, Massachusetts.
In the early 1990s Brin made a big break in her professional life and went
to massage therapy school to learn more about the body and how it works, following a lifelong interest. She has had a solo practice in therapeutic massage since 1994 that includes a variety of approaches, including Jin Shin Do, myofascial release and guided relaxation.
She also coaches people in preparing for surgery through deep relaxation and imagery to help the healing process. To keep her own body and mind limber and flexible, she practices Qigong and yoga, and is also a member of the Old Chatham Quaker Meeting. She makes her home in Chatham, New York.
