Award-winning francophone singer Michelle A. Richard has been delivering engaging and captivating performances of jazz, French, original, R&B, and musical theatre. In May, she received the Laureate Award for this year’s Pacific En Chanson Competition featuring francophone artists from BC and the Yukon. Fresh from a tour, in June, of BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba with Theatre In the Raw as a singer/actor, then with Chant West, Michelle is thrilled to be releasing her first album.
“What a fantastic treat to have you here on Blue Monday. What a gorgeous CD, it’s like satin!” Skyy Powers, CFRO 102.7FM
“You’re truly talented and I have been enjoying listening to your songs. Just amazing.” Meghan Clarkston, Sea to Sky News
A French-Canadian from New Brunswick by birth, returning to her roots has been an important part of Michelle’s musical journey. This is her first bilingual album and includes three of her own songs.
Says Michelle: “With this album I wanted to combine traditional and modern song elements to create a journey between the two worlds. I love traditional Acadian songs, the way that they change meters within a song, the beautiful melodies. Also their themes are the same as today: longing, loss, love, daily life, and also the use of animals as messengers in songs. Though they’re over 400 years old, I discovered that those songs combine well musically and linguistically with the challenging jazz and blues genre.
The album features these instrumentalists and co-arrangers:
-Lawrie Koyle on electric and acoustic guitars, who has toured and recorded with Long John Baldry, Idle Eyes, The Platters, and many more, and co-arranged the Grammy Award-winning "With a Wink and a Smile" from Sleepless In Seattle (1995).
-drummer and percussionist Richard Brown, who has played with world-class performers such as Jimmy Bowskill and Deborah Cox.
-acoustic bassist, Russell Sholberg, whose projects include the soundtrack for “The Corporation”.
-Adam Popowitz, of Rear Window Studios, recorded, mixed, mastered and co-produced the album, and contributed some arranging ideas to one song.
Says Michelle: It was a pleasure to work with such great musicians and with Adam. They really put their heart and soul into this project and added so much to the interpretations of the songs. It was a great experience.
