Hailing from Huntsville, Alabama, RJR evolved out of a monthly first-Sunday gig at the Flying Monkey Arts Center fronted by keyboardist Newt Johnson and guitarist-bassist Jim Cavender, with a cast of other players that eventually settled into the current lineup. While fiery improvisation certainly places RJR firmly into the jazz tradition, the emphasis on cleverly-written original tunes and interesting cover choices (often taken from rock, pop and r&b sources) is one way the group parts company with typical jazz offerings. Another unusual quality is the variety of instrumentation, with textures changing to meet the needs of each song. Such odd instruments as accordion and bass VI (a guitar tuned down a whole octave, often associated with Western movie soundtracks) make for a surprising, ever-changing sonic identity.

Newt Johnson has played organ with the Skip Heller Trio, performing on their Along The Anchorline CD recorded at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee in 2006. Jim Cavender played guitar in the Jungle, a jazz group he co-led with trumpeter Ken Watters that released one self-titled LP in 1986. He also plays upright bass with the Keith Taylor Trio, and has played in dozens of rock, r&b, country, blues and jazz groups. Johnson and Cavender also play together in Trio El Camino, a funky organ combo. Brian Palmieri has drummed for the Devere Pride Trio, the Monica DiSilva Quartet and the Dana Fletcher Band and resides in Chicago. Ben Cohen plays in the Knoxville, Tennessee area with the band Kung Fusion.

The Rolling Jazz Revue’s debut CD, Halloween On Union Avenue, was recorded in August 2007 in a single all-night session in Roberts Hall auditorium at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and was released in January 2008. Every member of RJR contributed at least one original song to the session, and Ornette Coleman''s Ramblin'' rounds out the offering. A followup recording of original tunes was made in April 2008 and will be released soon.
