Xumapaz is a mixture of rhythms, lives, melodies, sensibilities and sounds. The paths of each of the band’s members came together at an essential point in their lives, at a unique place on the planet – Bogotá, Colombia -- to generate a powerful fusion:
Chicagoan Sally Station was bewitched at an early age by Colombian music and musicians and her soul-inspired music is peppered with Latin grooves and both Spanish and English vocals; Barranca-born percussionist Luis Pacheco combines the power of African drums with an exhilarating array of Colombian rhythms; piano virtuoso Michel Haase lays down Caribbean-inspired piano grooves and poppy keyboard accompaniment; Alex Vargas from the mythical, musical Mecca of Cali provides solid bass lines in any style, Pablo Bernal loves his rock and has become the master of fusing Colombian folk with World rhythms throughout his career as Carlos Vives’ drummer; vocalist Javier Pérez blends his sensuous and soulful voice with Sally’s and works together with Pacheco to create electrifying layers of percussion.
From its very beginnings, the music of Xumapaz has crossed geographic and musical borders in concerts and festivals such as Colombia’s world-renowned “Rock al Parque” and “Jazz al Parque” festivals, the Iberoamerican Theater Festival, film festival stages in Bogotá, London and Chicago, the “Miles of Music” festival in Chicago, the Glastonbury Festival in the UK and cultural events throughout Colombia, the US and Europe. The group won Colombia’s “Músicas del Mundo” world music award in 2006.
