Started in 1992, Hopeful Monsters began as the brainchild of Ian Johnston. Desiring to create intelligent music that best expressed his personality, Ian turned his classical piano training to the world of synthesizers and drum machines. Dubbing himself "The Swing Gang", he recorded one album (Greeks & Romans - unreleased) and one EP (Dinner at Delilah''s) in the years 1993 and 1994, respectively.
In 1995, he changed the name to "Hopeful Monsters" and began writing a large number of songs. Real life intervened, but the will of the music won out over other mundane concerns. In 1999-2000, Hopeful Monsters recorded and remixed over fifty songs, planning to release the music over the next few years. Real life intervened again, but now, at last, is The Nostalgia EP - the first commercial release from Hopeful Monsters and the first from Ian Johnston in over 10 years.
Blending synth-pop instrumentation with quirky, philosophical lyrics, complex rhythms, and soaring melodies, Hopeful Monsters is continually experimenting with their sound. Far from typical electronic music, the group focuses on layers of sounds and unique arrangements in style both new and familiar.
The band''s influences are diverse, spanning everything from baroque classical music and Gregorian chant to rockabilly to experimental to 80s synthpop and new wave. The music of Hopeful Monsters is sure to delight those looking for a true alternative to modern pop. Enjoy!
